The Gryphon Diablo 333 builds on the success of its acclaimed predecessor with a ten percent increase in output power, but its real advances go far beyond a simple boost in wattage. Drawing heavily from the technology developed for Gryphon’s flagship Apex and Commander amplifiers, the Diablo 333 benefits from a wealth of trickle-down innovation designed to elevate both performance and musical engagement.
Newly developed ultra-fast pre-driver transistors improve transparency, speed and overall musicality, while the amplifier’s output stage employs the very same devices found in Gryphon’s reference-level Apex amplifier, with ten output transistors per channel. Supporting this is a substantially upgraded power supply featuring an oversized Holmgren dual-mono transformer and 68,000µF of filter capacitance per channel. The result is exceptional dynamic authority, effortless control and the kind of power reserves that contribute to the amplifier’s substantial 50.6kg chassis.
Visually, the Diablo 333 is unmistakably Gryphon. Its striking triangular display incorporates a 4.3-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen, echoing the distinctive design language created by Gryphon founder Flemming Rasmussen for the Apex and Commander series. Custom-developed chassis spikes, originally engineered for Apex, provide enhanced mechanical grounding while complementing the amplifier’s elegant aesthetics.
Around the rear, Gryphon has equipped the Diablo 333 with an extensive range of connectivity options, including dual subwoofer outputs, a tape loop and selectable XLR or RCA Unity Gain home theatre bypass. Bespoke binding posts further underline the attention to detail, while the beautifully machined billet aluminium remote control, inherited from the Commander, replaces the previous Diablo 300 handset. A redesigned menu structure delivers a more intuitive user experience, and a rear-panel USB 2.0 connection makes future firmware updates quick and straightforward.
The result is an integrated amplifier that not only offers greater power, but also delivers meaningful improvements in refinement, usability and performance throughout.
Like its celebrated predecessor, the Diablo 300, the Diablo 333 can be further enhanced with optional Phono and DAC modules. However, these are far more than simple carry-overs; both have been comprehensively redesigned to deliver even higher levels of performance.
The new PS-3 Phono Module features a true dual-mono, fully balanced Class A topology from input to output, employing discrete circuitry with matched transistor arrays and no global negative feedback. Designed to extract the finest detail from both moving coil and moving magnet cartridges, the PS-3 also introduces premium gold-plated Neutrik balanced XLR inputs in place of the RCA connections used on the previous-generation PS-2S. For added convenience, moving coil loading can now be adjusted externally via dedicated left and right rear-panel switches, eliminating the need to access internal jumpers, while cartridge selection between MC and MM is managed directly through the Diablo 333's intuitive menu system.
The optional DAC-3 module is equally impressive. Built around the latest ESS ES9039PRO High-Performance Sabre DAC chipset, it offers exceptional resolution, transparency and musical refinement. Seven user-selectable PCM digital filters allow users to tailor performance to personal preference, while a comprehensive suite of digital inputs—including USB, AES/EBU, BNC and TOSLINK—ensures compatibility with virtually any source. The USB input supports all current high-resolution audio formats, delivering state-of-the-art digital playback capability.
For those fortunate enough to own a Diablo 300, there is no need for concern. It remains one of the most accomplished integrated amplifiers ever created and continues to outperform many newer, considerably more expensive designs. Its reputation is richly deserved.
Yet for listeners seeking the very finest in integrated amplifier performance, the Diablo 333 raises the benchmark once again. Benefiting from extensive technology derived from Gryphon's flagship Apex and Commander series, it delivers meaningful improvements in sound quality, power delivery, connectivity, usability and component specification.
Every aspect of the Diablo 300 has been carefully re-examined, refined and, wherever possible, enhanced. The result is an amplifier that retains everything that made its predecessor legendary while pushing performance to an even higher level.
The Gryphon Diablo 333 is not simply a replacement for the Diablo 300; it is the new reference point for integrated amplifier design and a compelling statement of what is possible when compromise is removed from the equation.
